A beautifully detailed and illustrated set offering scientific information and field observations on thousands of animal, bird, reptiles, fishes, and insect species throughout the world. Volumes I and II are devoted to mammals; Volumes III and IV cover birds; and Volumes V and VI describe fishes and reptiles. Each 2-volume section has consecutively numbered pages as described above.

The volumes have over 800 b/w woodcut engravings and illustrations. There are 34 stunningly detailed tipped-in chromolithographs with 68 full-page black and white wood engravings.

The covers are three-quarter pebbled brown textured leather, wrapped over the boards. The covers all have raised embossing on the spines and faces with gilded trim work. The edges and spines show light wear but all are intact and in very good shape for their age. The bindings are solid and tight, no loose pages or broken bindings. The interior pages are clean, no signs of foxing, etc. and there are no markings inside. Looks like the set was read and used very little. Very slight signs of age at the page edges.

The color and black and white images are beautifully detailed and all still in fine shape.
